Technology Vs Art
I've reached a point in my school career where I'm beginning to wonder if my degree is going to be worth anything and if I will enjoy working in the field in years to come.
The thing is, I have never considered myself a techie. I love to create websites, but I consider the coding of PHP, of databases, that sort of thing to merely be a necessary evil. I don't learn those things because I want to, but because I have to.
I love my IT courses. I love the people I've met through them.
But I think I love "design" more.
There lies the problem, much like that thing covered in foil at the back of the fridge. And much like the stuff in foil at the back of the fridge, I'm determined to poke at it with that chopstick that lost its mate until I figure out what it is.
What it boils down to is that basically I think I'm an ok coder, an ok 'designer', and an ok writer. I don't think I'm spectacular at any of them. But... they're all I got. I want to use them. I love all three... but can I do any of them well enough to... you know... survive by doing them?
It's really coming down to the wire. I'll be done with my associate's degree in about a year and I have to move on somehow. Do I continue at CPCC or move to a four-year university? And if I do move to a four-year... what the hell do I study!
UNC Chapel Hill has a great IT program. NC State has a great Graphic Design program.
I think I'd be the worst student in both of them.
Maybe I'm only cut out to ring up groceries for the rest of my life.
