Steve Jobs Killed Paul Thurrott's Father... And then the heads of Google danced on his grave!

Paul Thurrott, I love you. You're just so misguided. If they could only clone you and put you into White House Press Conferences to ask easy questions of the president, they would. You already have the whole 'brown nose a rich guy' thing down and you've got none of that troubling 'gay prostitute' stuff in your background. I mean, at least as far as we know.

It's not that Paul's a bad journalist. It's that he doesn't try really hard to be a good one. As a fellow journalist, even if in a much smaller league, I've decided to help Paul out with a few tips on how to be a better journalist.

If you're going to accept bribes, do it under the table. Don't do it as 'advertising'.

Here's a good rule to start with, Paul. When your site focuses on the dealings of one company, do not accept advertising from them. I know it hurts your pocketbook, but people might actually believe you when you say 'I love Windows XP' if there wasn't a large 'Buy Office NOW' ad next to it.

Just a thought.

Don't Lie.

It's bad for business and you'll have to keep buying pants when the old pair catches on fire.

Take a quote from this article that Paul did on MSN Search:

So how does Google do? Google finds a whopping 74,100 Michael Jackson images, and like MSN Search, it does offer Large, Medium, and Small filtering. But you can't display only color or black and white images, and good luck finding what you want in a list of images that long. On the other hand, more is arguably "better" when it comes to search results, though "relevancy" trumps volume.

Wow, Paul. That's a great point. Except for that part about it being wrong.

Google does indeed let you sort by image coloration. It's just on the Avanced Image Search Page. You know, because it's an advanced feature and all. Just because a feature isn't on the main page, that doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

Google Image search also lets you search for 'Grayscale images' seperate from 'black & white' images because they are actually two different thigns. GIS also allows you to restrict an image search to a specific domain and even find images that are specifically not related to a subject. Not seeing those on MSN Search.

I love my work. I hate my work.

it-newTN.jpg Have you even been on a project so long that finishing it seems like giving birth. The pain, the joy, the realization that you will need to spend at least the next 18 years defending it against people who wish to sully it in some fashion.

Yeah, I know exactly how you feel.

The IT site and Academies site went live yesterday, and the student chapter of ACM even used the header image I made for them.

it-oldTN.jpg All in all, that should be reason to celebrate, but frankly all it did was wear me out. Especially since the changes I asked for months ago and never got have finally started to appear now that the site is live.

What's even worse is the fact that the Marketing department of the college has revamped the original I worked from to include a large mint green bar, for no apparent reason.

it-proposedTN.jpg For a school with a large IT program, it's is amazing how they seem to have no idea how to design webpages. The new IT design is ugly and boring.

Exactly what you don't want when you're trying to sell classes to people.

I'm so over it. If they decide that the large green bar is needed, well they can deal with the World's Largest Stylesheet™ and do it themselves.

I'm sure that the 'web designer' at the college could handle it. After all he sure knows how to use Frontpage really well.

Who needs the Super Bowl? There's a Sale!

You know, I've never taken much interest in sports, football in particular. The sport never made sense to me. Why call it football when there's basically one guy on the team who kicks the ball.

And he doesn't seem to do it that often. Add to that the fact that the big football fan in my family was my grandmother. It just took something away from the sport when Gran's cheering for the Cowboys.

In high school, the coaches always wanted me to try out for the football team. I never took them seriously. Didn't they see me in gym class? Didn't they know that I tended to fall over giggling when tackled? Of course, I also fell over giggling when running track, playing baseball, or any other physical activity. It was a defense mechanism.

I knew why they wanted me on the team. I was rather large and looked like I would be difficult to knock over. I'd like to draw your attention back to the whole 'giggle and fall over' thing.

So, I'm not watching the Super Bowl. Hell, I'm not even sure who's playing. Let me check.

The Patriots and The Eagles. Wow, Could we get more All-American?

Instead of watching the Super Bowl, the Half-Time show, The Pre-game Show, The Post Pre-game Pre-game Show, and all those commercials that we will see way too often in the next few weeks... I went shopping.

Gmail loves me, this I know

Yesterday in Game Design class, I gave out two Gmail invites, so Gmail decided to reward me. I mean, yes I've sent received around 1500 emails in just over 6 months, but did I need 50 Gmail invites?

Well, needless to say, I'm pleased.

If you'd like one, let me know. I have plenty.
